💬 Interview with dialog: Finding Voice, Building Identity

For years, dialog has been the creative force behind the scenes, composing and producing hundreds of drama OST tracks that carried emotion, deepened storylines, and touched countless listeners. But now, he is stepping into the spotlight for the first time—not just as a composer, but as a solo artist.

With his 6-track debut EP [basecamp], featuring morning twist, boyscout, doodle, pajama party, campfire, and the title track basecamp, dialog opens a new chapter. This release is more than music—it’s his own “dialogue” with the world, intimate and personal in a way his OST work could only hint at.

We spoke with dialog about the leap from OST producer to solo artist, the creative process behind [basecamp], and the identity he’s carving for himself as an artist.

🗣 dialog

🎶 You’ve composed and produced over hundreds of drama OST tracks. What made you decide that now was the right time to step into the spotlight as a solo artist?

🗣 For a long time, I expressed other people’s stories through music, but at some point, I felt a strong desire to share my own story with my own voice as a musician. I wanted to rediscover the pure “joy” and “freedom” of making music, and that became the biggest reason why I decided to begin this solo project at this moment.

🎶 How has your background in OST composition shaped the way you approached your own music in [basecamp]?

🗣 OST work trains you to capture scenes and emotions in detail. Especially since you need to create music that paints a scene, those experiences influenced how I make music overall. While creating [basecamp], I put a lot of effort into making music that evokes vivid imagery.

🎶 What are the biggest differences between writing for a drama OST and writing music that tells your story?

🗣 An OST is a kind of “custom-made music” tailored to someone else’s story, whereas my own music is a process of putting in my emotions completely. While creating, I thought a lot about what music fits my voice best, what I want to say right now, and the direction I want to pursue as Dailog. I think that’s the biggest difference.

ree

🎶 Do you see dialog as a continuation of your OST career, or as a completely new chapter?

🗣 I think it’s both. My past experiences have laid the foundation, but at the same time, this is the first chapter of exploring a completely new identity. As a musician releasing my own work, it can be seen as a continuation as well.

🎶 Your stage name, dialog, reflects conversation. Why did you choose it, and how do you hope it frames your music?

🗣 It comes from Daily + Log. I want to capture everyday emotions like a diary and put them into music. I hope those songs naturally seep into someone’s daily life and feel like a conversation.

🎶 As someone who has supported stories through OSTs, what story are you telling now with your debut EP?

🗣 I wanted to portray the love I experienced as a “shelter.” My message is that even in a difficult life, love can give you the courage to live each day. Put differently, I wanted to speak about the preciousness of love.

ree

🎶 How would you describe your artistic identity at this turning point in your career?

🗣 I’d describe myself as someone who pursues both familiar melodies and new experiments, making music that is warm yet honest.

🎶 The EP title, [basecamp], suggests a starting point. What does “basecamp” mean to you?

🗣 If life is a rough journey, then love is the “basecamp” that gives you the strength to start again. Within basecamp, you can truly rest, recharge, and experience happiness in its purest, childlike sense.

🎶 The tracklist (morning twist, boyscout, doodle, pajama party, campfire) feels nostalgic and intimate. What was the inspiration behind this concept?

🗣 I wanted to capture a day spent at basecamp. From the bright energy of morning (morning twist) to the warm glow of night (campfire), the flow came together naturally.

🎶 Which song was the hardest to complete, and which came together most naturally?

🗣 “boyscout” was the hardest, as I worked to capture simple yet powerful energy, and it took many revisions. I put effort into expressing emotions and energy I don’t usually convey. On the other hand, “morning twist” was almost spontaneous, and it fit perfectly as the opening track. Since it was written very naturally without much overthinking, I think that’s why it feels fun and effortless to listen to.

🎶 Was there a specific emotion or idea you wanted listeners to feel while experiencing [basecamp]?

🗣 The preciousness of love. I hope listeners feel both comfort, like a small shelter, and the excitement of a new beginning through love.

🎶 When writing your own music, do you start with melody, lyrics, or atmosphere?

🗣 For songs where I want energy and strength, I start by creating a short musical theme and feeling the beat. For emotional songs, I focus on melody and harmony, writing with guitar or piano.

🎶 Where do you find inspiration when composing—daily life, memories, or other art forms?

🗣 I often find it in small everyday moments, as well as in other arts like films or photography. Lately, I sometimes start from a specific word or phrase, then expand it into a full song.

🎶 Did you face new creative challenges working on your debut as dialog compared to OST projects?

🗣 The biggest challenge was being responsible for everything on my own—recording, mixing, mastering, visuals, and even promotion. While it may not be the perfect outcome, I believe I captured the best possible result with my own color.

🎶 What does success mean to you now as you begin this solo chapter?

🗣 Rather than numbers or achievements, I think success is when my music can change someone’s day, even just a little. If the sounds I create can become a small pause in someone’s daily life, that’s success for me.

🎶 How do you hope listeners will connect with [basecamp] differently than they might with your OST work?

🗣 OSTs are remembered together with scenes, but I hope this album connects with listeners’ personal experiences and emotions.

ree

🎶 Are there genres or collaborations you’d like to explore now that you’re creating under dialog?

🗣 I’d like to experiment with mixing Britpop and analog synths. I want to create music driven by simple yet striking guitar riffs on top of pop-based sounds.

🎶 What kind of dialogue do you hope to start with listeners through your music?

🗣 Everyone defines love differently, and I’d like to share those definitions together. I want to open a dialogue about the love I’ve felt and experienced.

🎶 Looking ahead, do you see yourself balancing OST work and solo artistry, or focusing primarily on dialog?

🗣 I want to balance both OST and solo work. I believe the two areas will influence each other and expand my musical world. I want to keep growing as a musician and communicating with many people through music.

ree

🎶 Finally, what message do you want to share with people hearing dialog for the first time through [basecamp]?

🗣 My music may not be grand, but I hope it can deliver warmth like a small shelter. I think when people fall in love, they gain a precious and pure heart like that of a child. Let’s all love each other!

With [basecamp], dialog steps out from behind the curtain of OST soundtracks and into his own spotlight. It’s the beginning of a new conversation—one that carries the depth of his years of experience, but also the freshness of an artist sharing his personal voice for the very first time.
