slayr and Hatsune Miku Bring Underground Rap and Vocaloid Energy Together on “Light”
Philadelphia underground rap has met one of Japan’s most recognizable virtual performers? slayr and Hatsune Miku have released “Light,” a high-energy collaboration that brings drum and bass, rap, electronic production, and Vocaloid culture together without trying to make any of those pieces feel separate. The new single also brings Japanese artist XAMIYA and Vocaloid producer picco into the mix, creating a track that feels very much at home in the space where internet culture and music continue to overlap.
“Light” is the second single released through BEYOND BORDERs, a global initiative from Japanese IT and media company Dwango focused on connecting Japanese Vocaloid creators with artists, producers, and songwriters from around the world. The project is built around a pretty simple idea: music created through Vocaloid technology does not have to stay within one scene, country, or genre. With slayr bringing his Philadelphia-rooted underground sound and Miku providing her unmistakable digital vocal presence, “Light” puts that idea into practice through a song that is meant to move quickly and hit hard.
The standout feature of "Light" is its momentum. The drum-and-bass influence propels the instrumental forward at an unrelenting speed, while the production offers slayr ample space to incorporate his rap delivery seamlessly into the track, ensuring Miku doesn't seem like an additional feature merely layered on top. Her digitally precise vocals integrate into the production itself, providing a contrast to slayr's more grounded style. XAMIYA contributes another vocal texture, while picco's expertise in the Vocaloid scene unifies the diverse sounds. Miku has long existed at the crossroads of music, technology, animation, and online fan communities, while slayr hails from an underground rap scene that has similarly thrived through internet culture and digital communities. "Light" merges these worlds in a way that feels less like a first-time encounter between two disparate scenes and more like an ongoing dialogue between communities that have evolved alongside one another.
The accompanying animated visualizer takes that idea even further, turning the collaboration into an actual confrontation between slayr and Miku. The visual features the two facing off in an animated battle, matching the song's aggressive energy rather than treating the video as a simple backdrop. With the track moving at such a fast pace, the animated approach gives the song another outlet for its larger-than-life energy and makes the pairing of a real-world rapper with a virtual singer feel right at home.
The EP was first introduced during the sold-out JAPAN MUSIC VOCALOID showcase at Anime Expo in Los Angeles over the July 4th weekend, giving fans an early look at the direction of the project before the individual singles began rolling out. With “Miku-Maxxing” opening the door and “Light” taking things into a much heavier electronic and rap-driven space, the upcoming tracklist is already showing that there is not going to be one single sound defining this version of Miku. Miku began as music software developed by Crypton Future Media that allowed users to create songs by entering melodies and lyrics. As creators began sharing their work online, the software grew into a much larger culture surrounding music, art, animation, merchandise, and eventually live virtual performances.
“Light” allows slayr's rap, Miku's unmistakable digital vocals, XAMIYA's contribution, and picco's production to come together over a restless drum-and-bass foundation that keeps pushing forward.
