One consistent issue that pops up in the context of global pop culture analysis is how proximity may exist between artists and audiences in a time where there is never-ending connectivity but continuous distance. The story behind the formation of Big Ocean has been an example in which proximity may take place not only based on performances but also on communication and scheduling. Released on May 19, 2026 at 6PM KST, “Make It Up to You” marks their comeback as a digital single under Parastar Entertainment as part of their ongoing story amid the interruption of their international itinerary and a very active global fanbase called PADO.

This happened right after the cancellation of some parts of their Europe Tour 2026. This was done due to a situation that compelled PJ, Jiseok, and Chanyeon to communicate directly with their fans without any formalities. In a live broadcast done immediately after the news, the group addressed their fans in a very informal way, with the sole aim of explaining their current situation and acknowledging the expectations of their fans. There was no presentation of any promotional content in the live session; instead, there was a quiet tone used throughout the discussion.

The two-day countdown before the release saw Big Ocean throwing an exclusive concert via streaming on May 17th, starting from 3 PM CEST, targeted solely towards those fans who had tickets for the concerts canceled across Europe. The show was live streamed from the company premises and did not follow the production standards normally expected from international K-pop shows. There was no stage used for the performance but rather the space staging techniques, simple camera placements, and real time audience participation were employed instead. For instance, the viewers got to choose certain aspects of the style of clothing used by the artists during some parts of the show.

For this particular performance, the members performed the new song titled "Make It Up To You" for the first time ever in public. In fact, the new song was not announced in advance but appeared as part of a sequence in the setlist progression. The response of the live chat at the beginning of the performance showed that the theme of this song is associated with the postponed tour. After the performance, handwritten messages from all band members appeared on the screen, addressing the topic of the canceled tour, and also reflecting their thoughts about lost contact with the fans from Europe. The message written by the members had one theme in common: an explanation of absence and future plans.

In light of production credits provided together with the release of the single, “Make It Up to You” was written in around a week within the timeframe initially intended for the European tour. This places the writing process directly into the timeframe of cancellation and can be viewed as a transfer of efforts from performing live shows to working in the studio. The song marks another collaboration between Big Ocean and Frankie Biggz as the producer, having worked with him before on The Greatest Battle. Other writers involved in creating the music included Rome Lucio, as well as Irene Bauza, Jade Gant, Sun.C, Kwak Soo jin, and the group itself – PJ, Jiseok, and Chanyeon.

From a musical standpoint, the song can be described as a fusion of the disco funk style of music from the 1970s and the current city pop style. From the start of the track, there are a few piano notes played, which form the basis of harmony before an arrangement takes off. At first, there is a slow build up in the track, starting off with a rhythmical slap bass, followed by some syncopation from the guitar and synthesized sounds.

The speed of the song has been noted as 127.5 beats per minute. The tempo range for a song such as this one is mid-to-upbeat, making the song more fit for dance oriented pop productions. The track does not focus on fast rhythmic playing but instead balances it out in order to allow vocals to come through clearly.

One of the defining features of the release is its multilingual content of lyrics. The track includes lines and phrases in Korean, English, German, French, and Polish languages. Names of particular cities which have been planned to participate in the tour are used as lyrics in the songs and not as separate spoken parts. Therefore, these names are included in the lyrics of the song and not just mentioned. In addition, the localization of the lyrics may reflect the localization of the tour itself across different areas.

According to statements from the band's representatives, this is their response to all those fans who had been looking forward to meeting them on canceled tours. The band said, "We couldn't be there in person, but we never stopped thinking about you. This song is us letting you know that we'll be back, and we'll make it up to you." It works both as an explanation of their motivation and as an advertisement for the album.

In terms of production, Frankie Biggz highlighted the fact that it continues the legacy of the group in regard to sound identity and emphasizes the presence of a live band and rhythm section. The composition features both live and programmed elements, which include live bass and guitar rhythms, as well as the vocal melodies. It can be stated that there is no innovation in regard to production compared to previous work done by the group.

The industry background of Big Ocean makes the artists unique since the group can be considered as the first K-pop idols who are deaf. However, for the purposes of analysis of this specific song, the issue of identification is not taken into consideration, and the emphasis is placed on the compositional aspects and connection to the listeners. The involvement of the group members in lyrical development was confirmed by the international songwriting process conducted in collaboration with the members.

Parastar Entertainment's involvement in the release of the song follows a well-established release schedule, which consists of combining digital singles releases with concerts organized as events for engaging fans in activities. However, unlike the usual process, the current order of events includes holding an online concert as the first step, which allowed creating an efficient pre-launch phase for exposure. In choosing to present the track within the confines of the fan community prior to the online release, a focused communication approach is implemented that targets only those who would have gone to the tour had it not been canceled.

Audience reactions show that the perception of the track focuses on the connection to the cancelled tour rather than its stylistic novelty. Listeners have mentioned their associations of the track lyrics with places in the cities referenced in the song and multilingualism as evident from the lyrics' context.

“Make It Up to You” can be streamed on all major global streaming sites from May 19, 2026. As far as Big Ocean’s discography is concerned, “Make It Up to You” serves as part of their current stage of collaboration without changing their overall orientation but rather building up upon their previous experience in this area, using situational songwriting. The creation of the single is defined by particular logistical circumstances that resulted in turning planned action into recordings.
