- [Meet The Artist] The Journey So Far: MADKID Reflects on a Decade of Music and Prepares to Embark in Their First North American Tour!
Exclusive Interview Happy New Year, #SoundLovers🎶! We are excited to begin 2025 by introducing a uniquely curated Japanese rock group! Making their Canadian debut at Anime North in Toronto that May of 2024, MADKID will proudly make their return to the U.S. with their first North American tour, commencing on January 24, 2025! Ahead of their tour, K Fuse was presented with the honor to talk with the members of this incredibly talented group. Check out our exclusive interview with MADKID as we discuss their upcoming tour and look back on the past 10 years. In celebration of their tenth anniversary, MADKID , a Japanese vocal and dance unit of five members, skillfully blends new wave trap, glitch hop, and rock to produce a distinctive musical style. With two bilingual rappers -- LIN and Yuki -- and three vocalists -- YOU-TA, SHIN, and Kazuki -- MADKID presents a unique configuration compared to conventional J-Pop groups. Their debut was the digital single, " i don't CARE 'MADKID' ." At that time, SHIN was not yet a member, and Rikito was part of the group. Following four more singles and an eleven-track self-titled album, SHIN joined MADKID in 2017 with the single album, 'PARTY UP/Faded away.' On January 31, 2018, MADKID made their major debut with Nippon Columbia, who continues to handle record production, while the group releases music through their own company, Future Notes. MADKID 's successful foray into the anime world began in 2019 with their single, " RISE ," the opening theme for the first season of ' The Rising of the Shield Hero .' " FAITH " later appeared in the second half of that season. Their 2020 single, " Get up ," served as an event song for the mobile game ' Dragalia Lost: Scars of the Syndicate .' " Reboot ," their final 2020 release, marked a period of transition, notably featuring LIN's rap in the chorus, followed by a decrease in releases during 2021. MADKID's " Bring Back " served as the opening theme for the second season of ' The Rising of the Shield Hero ' in 2022, with " Fight It Out " used in promotional materials, and " Change the World " featured in ' Beast Tamer Expelled from the Hero Party Meets the Strongest Cat Girl .' In January 2023, " PARANOID " was released for the Netflix series ' Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre,' and " SIN " became the opening theme for Season 3 of ' The Rising of the Shield Hero ' in October. December 2023 saw the release of " FLY ", the opening theme for ' Sasaki and Peeps ,' which premiered in January 2024. " Futatsu no Kotoba " followed in April 2024, as the opening theme for ' TADAIMA, OKAERI .' Finally, " Chaser " was released in October 2024 as the opening theme for ' Haigakura .' Happy New Year, MADKID! Thank you for speaking with us at K Fuse and giving us the chance to share your story with our readers. Today's interview aims to introduce you to new readers, reconnect you with longtime fans (AXCEL), and discuss your upcoming North American tour. Would you please introduce yourselves—as a group and individually—to our readers who may not be familiar with you? YOU-TA (Leader) : We are a Japanese boy band who consists of two rappers and three vocals. We are in charge of various anime songs, including the anime, 'The Rising of the Shield Hero.' What were your initial impressions of the other members? LIN : Our member, KAZUKI, said, "I can't dance quite well" even though he had never danced before. I was nervous and wondered how his dance would be, but I was surprised that he couldn't actually dance at all! What factors influenced your decision to pursue a career in music? SHIN : When I saw the DVD of the artist that was popular when I was student, I wanted to become a musician. YUKI : It was Michael Jackson who originally inspired me to become an artist. After that, I was influenced by many other artists -- including BIGBANG. How would you characterize your musical style for those unfamiliar with your work? SHIN : We are a group of dance vocalists. However, since 2019, we have started expressing music with a more rock sound. I think the band sound matches our music the best. Which songs would you suggest to introduce MADKID to new listeners? LIN : If you don't already know "RISE," that is always my first suggestion to new listeners! "RISE" is our signature song and is the opening theme of the anime series 'The Rise of the Shield Hero.' This song is what inspired us to incorporate rock into our music. What has been the most significant obstacle you've encountered since your debut? YOU-TA : Definitely during the pandemic. I was frustrated because we couldn't do any live performances, or activities that allowed us to meet AXCEL. However, the fact that we started our own management company during that time is what led us to where we are now. You recently celebrated your 10th anniversary. What is MADKID's growth trajectory over the past decade? YUKI : To be honest, 10 years have passed in no time, which is my honest impression. But, when I look back, the result of always doing what's in front of us is what I think has connected MADKID to the present. What event would you identify as MADKID's pivotal moment? KAZUKI : If we hadn't met the TV animation team for 'The Rising of the Shield Hero,' I don't think we would have entered the anime scene, and I don't think we would be where we are now -- fixing to hold our first North American live tour. So, meeting with 'The Rising of the Shield Hero' team is the most important moment for us! What would you consider to be your personal turning point? SHIN : I feel like joining MADKID in 2017 and meeting the members was a turning point for my musical journey. If you didn't pursue a career as an artist, what alternative career path would you have pursued? YOU-TA : It I wasn't an artist, then I would have found a job that allowed me to travel all over the world to work! But even if I didn't work as an artist, I will still be singing. Your group's unique configuration—two rappers, three vocalists, and all members excelling in dance—is noteworthy. Was this always the envisioned structure? How were roles assigned? Did each member possess prior experience in their respective roles before the group's formation and debut? KAZUKI : YUKI and LIN originally wanted to be rappers, so it naturally became our structure. None of the members had professional experience in their respective roles before joining MADKID. Which song from your discography is your personal favorite, and why? YUKI : "Gold Medal." Our member LIN composed the song and wrote the lyrics with all the members. I release the song during the time of the pandemic, so I have a lot of memories -- including the production process. It's a song that makes me feel happy while performing! Each member plays a crucial role in the creation of MADKID's music and choreography. Could you elaborate on each member's role in the creative process? YOU-TA : LIN and YUKI often write lyrics, but sometimes all the members write lyrics. The songwriting and arrangement are mainly done by LIN. SHIN : For choreography, it is based on the image and theme of the song, so I don't usually think but about the difficulty level of the dance. LIN : For production, arrangement, and lyrics, I often get inspiration by studying the tie-up anime thoroughly first. January 31st marks your 7th anniversary of major-label debut under Nippon Columbia! Congratulations! You will soon embark on a joint tour with NANO across North America. How are you preparing for this tour? KAZUKI : Thank you! I will continue to work hard to stay active for a long time! YUKI : It's our first North American tour. We're preparing a lot so that there is something for everyone who comes out to catch one of our shows! I hope we can perform together with NANO, so please look forward to it! Do you have any pre-show routines that you utilize? SHIN : There is a routing where members shout and touch their backs before the show. Might you be able to offer any spoilers of what attendees can anticipate? YOU-TA : Attendees can always expect a performance of the opening song for 'The Rising of the Shield Hero!' How was the setlist for this tour chosen? LIN : We have selected songs that have proven to be popular overseas! Please come out and join us, as you won't want to miss the lineup that we have chosen! Are there any stops that you are particularly looking forward to? YUKI : I am looking forward to all the cities, but I have always wanted to go to Los Angeles, so I am looking forward to it (**this interview was conducted prior to the LA fires. Our hearts and prayers remain with those affected by these fires and the aftereffects.) Are there any places you would like to visit while stateside? KAZUKI : I would love to go to Times Square while we are in New York! Are you currently working on any new projects? If so, could you provide us with some spoilers? SHIN : Yes. We will also be touring Japan in 2024, and we are planning many more things beyond that. While I cannot say much more than that right now, I will be able to share soon, so please look forward to it! With the New Year here, we want to inquire about your goals for this year? Yuki : First of all, the important goal of this year is to make the North American tour a success! We would like to once again thank you for taking the time to talk with us here at K Fuse. Before we wrap up our interview, is there a message that you would like to leave for AXCEL, and our readers? YOU-TA: K Fuse readers, thank you for reading so far. We will continue to do our best to perform live in various parts of the world, so please support us. This new single showcases not only the artist's exceptional vocal talent but also his ability to create tracks that everyone can relate to. The song features a blend of festive melodies and heartfelt lyrics, a catchy chorus and engaging instrumentation. K Fuse has the pleasure of speaking with solos on December 19 about his creative process, musical background, and Christmas traditions. Check out our full interview with solos below! K Fuse: Good evening! My name is Britney, co-founder of K Fuse. How are you doing? solos: Hi, Britney. Thank you so much for having me. I am doing good. I was doing some music work right before this, but I'm excited to be here. K Fuse: First and foremost, thank you for speaking with me and sharing your experiences with our readers, whom we affectionately call SoundLovers. While we've been following your work for some time, some of our readers may be encountering your music for the first time. Would you be kind enough to introduce yourself? solos: Hi, SoundLovers! My name is Solos. I'm 26 and an American C-Pop idol, which means I'm American-born Chinese, but I write half English, half Chinese music. K Fuse: You've mentioned briefly what inspired you to become an idol on social media—which is, in fact, where we first discovered your "RENEGADE" cover. In discussing this, you also mentioned playing the piano and violin. Could you tell us how long you played those instruments, and what you found most rewarding about playing instrumental music while growing up? solos: Yes, of course. So, I started playing classical piano when I was five years old, and then I played up until the second year of high school. And violin, I also played since I was young. And then I quit in eighth grade to focus on piano. So, I kind of grew up with it. In the beginning, it was kind of just like my parents making me play. My mom actually plays piano, so she was my very first teacher. And so, yeah, I've been playing those instruments for a long time. And it's nice because starting with piano and violin, let's say, in a classical sense instead of a pop sense, it's nice because it gives me a technical foundation. So, physically, like how my hands move and things like that, it gives me a really good foundation for whatever I want to play in the future and also helps me learn how instruments kind of work together. For violin, for example, because playing in an orchestra, right, you can see where the violin fits in with the cellos, violas, et cetera. So having those foundational techniques helps a lot for sure. K Fuse: Could you please tell me about your journey and transition from instrumental music to singing covers and original compositions? solos: So, like I just said, I play piano classical music. Early on in middle school, I was kind of already improvising on the piano. It wasn't a finished song, but I was just playing whatever, and I would upload it to Facebook for my friends to see. So even early on, I was already kind of composing things, you could say. And then I also did anime piano covers back then, so I was always learning classical music, but also doing music that I wanted to do early on. But I really didn't start writing songs until I wrote a song or two here and there, but I didn't really, really start writing songs until college. Actually, towards the second to last year of college, it was more of a way for me to just put down my feelings into a nice song for myself and for my friends to hear. I didn't really expect to do more than that, but then Covid happened, and I graduated into Covid. I graduated in 2020, and I couldn't find a job at the time, and I was like, " you know, music is pretty fun ." By that point, I had already written one or two songs, but I wanted to get better and thought that maybe since I can't leave the house right now and am still looking for a job, maybe I'll work on my music abilities. So that's kind of how it all started. K Fuse: You made your debut on March 22nd with the mini album ‘Love Sick,’ featuring the title track, “Don't Waste My Time.” What message did you hope to convey to listeners with this album? solos: So " Waste My Time " in particular originated with just the lyrical idea, "oh, don't waste my time," but I wasn't really sure what to do with it. So there really was no backstory for it. So, I ended up talking to a friend, and she told me that she actually did have an experience getting cheated on, and I was like, oh, wait, that's perfect. I think a lot of songs about this topic are sad, which is fine. After talking to my friend and hearing her experience with being cheated on, I was like, "you know, maybe people should write, like, an angry song too, because why wouldn't you be angry, and why would you date a person if you're going to do that in the first place, right?" And I know people who go through that kind of experience also feel angry, too. So, I hope that for " Waste My Time " when people listen to it who have gone through something similar, they can relate to it. K Fuse: Given that you've released rap, pop, and R&B tracks, I'm curious which genre you feel best encapsulates your overall sound. Why? solos: I think overall, like personally, when I listen to music, I listen to a lot of R&B and hip hop. So, I would say, R&B because R&B is smooth and cool. The chords they use are really interesting, and I have just found so many good R&B songs. I also feel the vibe that it gives is kind of the vibe I like -- which is a darker and smoother vibe than other genres. K Fuse: Well just from an outside perspective, I feel like the R&B tracks fit you best. solos: That's good. I'm glad to hear that, because I like R&B the most, so hey, that's good. K Fuse: Are there any other genres you're currently exploring or interested in exploring in the future? solos: So, I just mentioned hip-hop. I don't rap that much. There is some rap in Waste My Time. And then I did a track called, " BMD ," which is also purely rap or mostly rap. I do want to improve my rapping skills. So, I have decided that I do want to do a rap album, but I haven't decided when -- but I have already started writing some songs that are mostly rap focused. K Fuse: While most of your lyrics are English, you do incorporate Chinese into your songs. How do you choose when to use Chinese lyrics instead of English? solos: So, I mostly write in English since my English is better than my Chinese. But I do want to have a good mix of both. So usually, if I start with English, I'll switch to Chinese. After that, I keep alternating so I have about a 50/50 mix. For example, verse one could be all in English, so then verse two will be all in Chinese, or the first half of verse one will be in English and the second half of verse two in Chinese. Something like that, just to have a good mix of both. But outside of that, the way I'll structure it is if there's something I want to say in particular or a specific meaning I want to get across, a lot of times it's obviously easier to say it in either Chinese or English. For example, there are a lot of things in Chinese, especially phrases with more nuance, that you can't really say in English, or it's just way harder or way lengthier to say in English. So for things like that, I'll definitely use Chinese. So whatever fits best, I guess, meaning-wise, and in general, just to have a good balance of both. K Fuse: Can you walk us through your creative process for a new song? solos: Yeah, so I usually start with the beat first, not always, but 90% of the time I'll start with the music first. Sometimes I'll be in the shower and come up with a banger melody line. I'm like, okay, I need to put something under that. But usually, it's the music first. Then, as I'm making the music, it'll usually be some really cool guitar loop I found or some piano idea that I had. I'll put it down as I'm making it. I will usually start to come up with melody ideas as well. Sometimes those will translate really well, and sometimes not as well. Then when I have a lyric idea that fits with the melody that I have, that kind of decides the theme for me. But if not, once I finish the music, I'll try to come up with a theme. I'll think about what kind of setting or environment can I hear this playing in? Like, oh, this song reminds me of being at the beach or this song is like I'm at a bar talking to my friends. So, I usually try to imagine what kind of scenario that kind of music would fit, decide on a theme, and then write from there. K Fuse: So, how do you deal with writer's block Say, if you get a melody that you like, and you get stuck when it comes to the lyrics?? solos: It happens a lot. It does happen a lot. I would definitely say that writing lyrics is one of my weaker points right now, but I think it's getting better because I've done it a lot. Usually, when that happens, I will try to talk to other people or talk to my friends. I'll be like, "Hey, I've made this music. What do you think? Or what does it remind you of?" Usually, they'll give me some interesting ideas, or they'll say something -- like they'll send me a whole paragraph, but one specific sentence that would make me go, "Oh wait, that's a really good idea." So definitely, you know, people around me. I'll go on a walk because sometimes it's ear fatigue as well. Like if you're making the beat for a couple of hours, you've heard the same thing over and over again. It's good to just step away. So, there's definitely a lot of things to do to get around that. K Fuse: Yes! We have a team member that I will actually call after a show, and share my thoughts with her, and she will sometimes come back with things that I missed in my draft, or she will rephrase to a much more concise or meaningful statement than what I have written. solos: Definitely. And I think because music especially is so subjective, it's like people will interpret your lyrics maybe not the same way you initially meant them. So it's always good to get other people's opinions on things. K Fuse: What are you most looking forward to in the coming months, whether it's a new project or a personal achievement? solos: Yeah, so the hip hop album I mentioned earlier, I'm excited about that. I've already got two songs I'm working on for it. Outside of that, for next year, I want to do more live events. So that's something I'm looking forward to as well, like performing live or meet and greets, and thinks like that. I'm really looking forward to connecting more in person with the other duos. K Fuse: So, we went to some fans for some questions. So here are some just for fun questions, what is on your wish list for Christmas? solos: Awesome! Oh, I honestly put really boring things on my wishlist. I think I put a new mouse pad and, like, a tray that I can bring to my desk to get food while working at my desk. I just like really boring things. But I think if I had to say something more interesting, I would say a new mic because the current microphone I'm using to record is an Audio Technica 2035. I've been using it since 2018. It's the first mic I ever bought, so I've had it for a long time, and I kind of do want to upgrade. So... probably a new mic, maybe the Mojave MA-200 or something like that. K Fuse: Hey now! Those trays are time efficient, nothing boring about those **haha** solos: It is; it's less cleanup. I don't have to worry too much—just random stuff like that. K Fuse: Seems like they are all centered around Christmas questions. Do you have any Christmas traditions that you're looking forward to next week? solos: That's okay. It is that time. Christmas traditions? Usually, it's just hanging with family or friends. So, for family, we usually just have a meal and do a mini present opening session. Then, I think usually I leave -- because I have to do stuff. Other than that, just hanging with them, and having a Christmas party with friends is always good. Nothing crazy. K Fuse: What are your top 3 New Year's Resolutions or goals for 2025? solos: Goals for 2025: I mentioned earlier more live events, such as tours and meet and greets, et cetera. I do want to collaborate with more artists next year because I think up until now, most of the songs I've released are just me. I think it'd be good to meet some other artists that are in the same space as I am. I actually recently got to know two other artists who are also kind of independent, kind of going for the indie route. It's exciting to see other people with the same goal as me as well. And third, if possible, I would like to move to LA, because right now I'm in Boston, but there aren't a lot of opportunities in this space, unfortunately. I don't want to say that's the only reason why I'm not bigger than I am now, but it's definitely stifling my growth to an extent, and I feel like I've done a lot online already. This kind of ties in with the more live events thing too, right? If I moved somewhere with more opportunities, I could do that as well. K Fuse: So, you mentioned more collabs. Do you have any specific artists in mind that you would like to collaborate with? solos: Yes. I have like dream artists to collaborate with. I don't think I'm at a point where I can reach out to them yet, but for dream artists, I would say Gemini -- number one. He's a Korean R&B artist for those that don't know. I really like his voice, and he's my most recent, biggest inspiration. So, Gemini, and then there's Keshi who is my earliest inspiration. So definitely those two. Then I think working with other Chinese idols would be cool -- like Henry Lau, Lay, even or Jackson Wang, But Gemini, yeah, that would be like dream goal. K Fuse: Before we wrap up, is there a message that you would like to leave for duos and our SoundLovers? solos: Yeah, all the duos and #SoundLovers. Thank you so much for listening to my music as well as today's interview with K-Fuse. Shout out to Brittany. You guys are the backbone of artists, especially smaller artists like me. So, all the support that you've given me is super important to me and it means a lot. And I hope that come 2025, I can keep giving you guys great music and content that you guys will enjoy. Speaking of support, if you do want to support me financially, we still have pre-orders open for the Desire physical albums. So, if you've been looking to get some physical merch, now would be a great chance because the pre-orders are still open until January 10th. And if you do order a physical album, there is a raffle for a fan call with me. So, if you want to talk to me, then make sure you go get an album. And yeah, I'm already working on the next EP, the next music, so I'm really excited for them too because I think, especially if you look back at my older songs until now, you can see my improvement as well. So, I already know the next music is going to be even better. So don't miss out and I hope you are looking forward to it. K Fuse: Thank you for your time, again! We look forward to tomorrow's release and seeing what 2025 has in store for you! solos: Yeah, the one tomorrow is really, it's a really cute song. Like, you guys are not ready. It's so cute. - Exclusive Interview: A Conversation with "Music Warrior," Chai Chang, Exploring His Musical Journey and Influences
K Fuse had a blast chatting with Chai Chang as he comes back with his second English digital single, 'Music Warrior,' a cool electropop and dance-pop shoutout to his idol, CoCo Lee. The song's lyrics tell the story of a music warrior who tackles challenges with confidence and a positive vibe. "After dropping my debut single last year, I'm back with a track meant to hit listeners right in the feels," Chang said. Growing up in Hong Kong, Chang was influenced by C-Pop, K-Pop, and Western tunes. He came up with the song after CoCo Lee passed away, drawing inspiration from her energy and talent. Even though he didn't have formal music training, Chang went for multiple degrees that weren't music related. This year, he's been all about honing his vocal skills, learning music theory, and diving into production, with plans to kickstart his music career through busking and live performances. The release of 'Music Warrior' includes a music video dropping on November 9th, featuring contemporary dance in various spots. "I want to carve out my own artistic identity and hope the audience catches my enthusiasm. I'll keep pushing myself to not let them down," Chai said. FIND OUR FULL INTERVIEW WITH CHAI CHANG BELOW K FUSE: Good evening and thank you for taking the time to speak with us here at K Fuse and sharing your story with our readers. Could you please take a moment to introduce yourself? Hello readers, my name is Chai Chang. I am a new independent singer currently based in Australia. Having grown up in Hong Kong, China, I have been passionate about music and inspired by C-Pop, K-Pop and Western music. Having studied 3 different degrees that bear entirely no relevance to music, I believe it’s never too late to start pursuing a fresh music career. After debuting as a solo dancing singer last year, I just released my 2nd English digital single – Music Warrior. K FUSE: For our readers who are meeting you for the first time, could you tell us about your start in music? What inspired you to pursue music as a career? When I graduated from my first degree, I moved to Hong Kong and worked for a several years mainly in administrative and marketing roles. After working for about 6 years, at the age of 29, I realized that I wanted to make a change and therefore relocated to Australia. Sadly, only after 2 months, COVID hit and there were on and off lockdowns. Most of the time I was staying inside my small apartment alone and started to lose self-confidence and communication skills. There was a moment where I realized I needed to step out of this situation, so I took the initiative to enroll in various courses including modelling, makeup, and fashion styling. After taking these courses, I decided to start doing modelling as a steppingstone towards my goal of being a solo dance singer and that was back in 2022. K FUSE: Who are your musical inspirations? I always inspire by singers from C-Pop, K-Pop and English-speaking countries including CoCo Lee, BTS, Nicole Scherzinger and many more. There are specific elements in each type of music that make them attractive and unique. K FUSE: Growing up in Hong Kong, what impact does your cultural background have on the music you create? Or even on your creative process? My cultural background affected my personal development and how I formed my own identity. There is a traditional thinking where I have to study hard at school and achieve good results. After graduation, getting a stable job in a large organization and gradually climbing up the ladder equal success. Thus, I did not receive much formal training in music at all. My creativity was also hindered during that period. K FUSE: You released your debut single, “ New Reality ” only one year ago. Blending C-Pop, K-Pop, and Western influences into a high-energy electronic track. Can you walk us through the creation of this song? There is no denying that people nowadays spend lots of time using and swiping their mobile phones. However, at times it’s hard to tell whether the information you learnt from the online media reflects the reality. The concept of ‘perfection’ on social media also changes how we think and do. We want to look good on social media so we can attract peers to ‘like’ and ‘follow’ us. The lyrics in the song “if I blurred my face until I've got no pores, maybe they can see that I am beautiful” and “you know that I would do anything it takes to get my 5 seconds of fame” best describe the phenomenon. The song ends with the line “welcome to the new reality” and this is why the song was born. K FUSE: You just released your second single, “ Music Warrior .” What message did you want to convey with this track? “Music Warrior” is an electropop and dance-pop song that is created to express respect to my music influencer CoCo Lee, an international renowned singer. The lyrics describe how a music warrior uses music as a tool to overcome all barriers. No matter how hard the difficulties are, one must remain confident, stay positive and never “back down from the climb”. The song ends with the line “now listen to the sound of a warrior”. We experience challenges and obstacles throughout different life stages. It is not uncommon for us to feel negative or even depressed whenever we are going through difficult times. We should stay positive and never give up. K FUSE: How would you describe your music / sound to new listeners? I have a rich baritone and my vocal style is a mix of breathier and stronger tones. Whenever I am working on a new piece of music, I’ll figure out how I can best showcase my unique voice so as to match the vibe of the music. I always want to convey a message in each of my song. I hope my new listeners can connect the messages to themselves when they are listening to my songs. K FUSE: As an independent artist, what advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue music as a career? It’s never too late to kick start. I believe the most important step is to plan ahead what you would like to do and achieve, followed by estimating the budget and resources needed. Never feel embarrassed to seek help during the process. K FUSE: What has been the greatest challenge as an independent artist? How do you face those challenges to overcome them? Lacking industry knowledge has been my greatest challenge as an independent artist. Music creation, production and marketing are all different areas of knowledge. It would almost be impossible for an independent artist to know and become an expert in everything. Therefore, seeking help and building connections in the industry are crucial. It is easier said than done and taking a step-by-step approach is recommended. K FUSE: How do you unwind from a stressful day? There are three things that I normally do. First, I would listen to music that I really like especially songs that provide positive vibe and energy. Second, I would go for a walk. It can relieve some stress and lift my mood. Third, chatting with my family members and close friends that I trust make me feel more relieved. K FUSE: Is there a message that you would like to leave for your fans, and our readers? I take pride in having a unique appearance coupled with a rich baritone. I also have a strong dedication to keep on challenging myself and creating my own artistic character. I hope my fans and readers can feel my passion and see how I am trying to improve as a music performer. - AleXa's "ENEMY": A Powerful Anthem of Betrayal, Empowerment, and Liberation
K-pop sensation AleXa has officially released her latest single, “ ENEMY ,” a hard-hitting track that delves deep into themes of betrayal, empowerment, and liberation. Marking her first K-pop release of the year, “ ENEMY ” is a poignant return to her roots, crafted as a powerful gift to her dedicated fan base before she shifts gears to her highly anticipated full English album, set to drop in early 2025. AleXa, originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the daughter of a Korean adoptee and a passionate dancer. Her journey kicked off with a win in Soompi’s “Rising Legends” competition, which got her a deal with ZB Label. She got more attention on Mnet’s “PRODUCE 48.” Her debut track, “ Bomb ,” dropped in October 2019 and quickly hit the Top 10 on Billboard’s “World Digital Song Sales Chart.” Elle spotlighted her as an artist breaking K-pop norms. In 2022, AleXa won NBC’s American Song Contest with “Wonderland,” which climbed to #38 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay Chart, making her the 6th most-played Korean artist on U.S. radio. She was the first female Korean act to present at the Billboard Music Awards. In 2024, AleXa made her debut at KCON in Los Angeles, and Forbes praised her English single “ distraction ” as a "rock banger." She made history as the first solo Korean artist at iHeart Radio's Jingle Ball, receiving kudos from Billboard, Grammy, People Magazine, MTV, and more. “ ENEMY ” delves deeply into the intricate and often tumultuous journey of breaking free from a toxic relationship, a theme that resonates with many who have experienced similar struggles. AleXa , with her powerful and evocative lyrics, captures the multifaceted emotions that accompany such a difficult transition, revealing both the profound pain endured and the remarkable strength that emerges in the aftermath. Through striking lines like “Always be that bitch, and you’re just my Enemy,” AleXa’s character boldly confronts the individual who has inflicted emotional harm, unequivocally establishing them as an adversary in her narrative. This declaration serves not only as a moment of defiance but also as a crucial step in her healing process, marking a pivotal shift in her perception of the relationship. The refrain of the song reinforces her determination to view this former connection through a lens of clarity, recognizing it as nothing more than a painful chapter in her life, now firmly relegated to the past. This acknowledgment is not merely an act of dismissal; it is a powerful affirmation of her growth and resilience. Throughout the song, AleXa articulates a tumult of emotions—betrayal that cuts deep, exhaustion from the emotional toll, and a simmering resentment that lingers in the shadows of her memories. Yet, as the lyrics unfold, they reveal a profound transformation as she grapples with these feelings, ultimately reclaiming her strength and independence. The journey depicted in “ ENEMY ” is not linear; it is a raw and authentic exploration of the psychological landscape following a toxic relationship. AleXa’s ability to convey the intensity of her emotions allows listeners to connect with her experience on a personal level. Each verse serves as a testament to her resilience, illustrating the gradual but powerful emergence of self-empowerment. The song embodies a message of liberation, reminding us that while the scars of the past may linger, they do not define us. Instead, they can become a source of strength, propelling us toward a brighter, more empowered future. In this powerful song, AleXa dives into self-liberation, sharing the journey from pain to healing. Lines like “니가 없어 편해졌어 숨을 쉬었어” (I became comfortable and could breathe without you) show off her new confidence and the relief of breaking free. This year's releases have highlighted AleXa’s growth as an artist and give a glimpse of what's in store for 2025. With " ENEMY ," AleXa builds on the success of her previous English single, "Joy of Missing Out," which got a lot of praise. UPROXX praised her versatility, saying, “Nobody can question AleXa’s versatility. ‘Joy Of Missing Out,’ AleXa’s fourth English-language song of 2024, is a far cry from K-pop, but the Oklahoma native seems right at home in a pop-punk palette.” Teen Vogue shared the excitement, mentioning, “Part of her upcoming debut English album slated for later this year, 'Joy of Missing Out' is a Y2K-ish pop-rock anthem that turns FOMO on its head.” Rolling Stone also featured the track in their Songs You Need To Know This Week roundup. - Cifika's "Bonfire": A Journey of Connection and Resilience
Cifika 's third studio album, Bonfire, a heartfelt dive into connection and acceptance, dropped on November 19th! Cifika is an artist from Seoul who’s got a knack for both sound and visuals. Her groundbreaking work as an artist, musician, and producer was recognized back in 2018 when she snagged the Best Dance & Electronic Song award at the 15th Korea Popular Music Awards. Growing up in the U.S. helped her easily switch between Korean and English in her lyrics, and her music goes beyond borders, showing off her versatility as a multi-talented artist on both local and global stages. CIFIKA thrives in the space between pop and avant-garde, in a way that any musician would admire. Her ambient vocal experiments were featured in the Men’s Fall-Winter 2021 Louis Vuitton campaign and runway show (with House Ambassadors BTS). Boiler Room picked her for a conceptual video series with Maison Valentino. She’s scored a robot/human dance piece for the Korean National Contemporary Dance Company and was invited to create and score an installation for ISM Berlin’s Hexadome project (alongside Thom Yorke, Brian Eno, Suzanne Ciani, and Holly Herndon), showing she’s as at home with highbrow art as she is in the club. CIFIKA has collaborated with a wide range of artists from ambient/IDM to UK garage, hip-hop, and R&B, including Lusine (Ghostly International), Romy from the XX, Girl Ultra, Flava D, Hyukoh, Crush, Woo Won-jae, and Dress. Already making waves outside of Korea with performances at SXSW, ADE, Reeperbahn, and some buzz-worthy club shows, CIFIKA is ready to share her music and vision with the world. She’s always drawn inspiration from vast landscapes, spiritual ideas, and endless memories. Now, she’s turning her attention to the vastness of space and the hidden world of molecules and atoms, channeling her ideas of light, love, and emotion into her most resilient work yet. After being nominated for Best Electronic Album at the 2024 Korean Popular Music Awards for her second album “ION,” released in 2023, and winning Best Electronic Song for the track “Hush,” Cifika has poured her musical thoughts and communication from the past year into this album. She’s drawn inspiration from various genres to step beyond her previous electronic music category and take listeners on a captivating journey with a richer, warmer sound. With 11 tracks in total, the album mixes elements of electronic music, alternative folk, ambient, pop, and more. It features upcoming producers like Nancy Boy, who’s worked with artists such as BTS's RM, Qim Isle, and Seori, and Umaka, a guitarist, producer, and singer-songwriter, who helped Cifika finalize her musical vision, enhancing the album's depth and resonance. The album kicks off with " View ," designed to showcase a pure voice and set the stage for the next track. “If I Could Be” shines with a vocal harmonizer during the electric guitar solo, adding a unique touch. The song keeps the raw, unpolished vibe of the demo, capturing the essence of the guitar and vocals. Through the lyrics, CIFIKA symbolically reassures listeners that their potential remains intact. The core track of the album is " Little Drama ," inspired by the imagery of “The Little Drummer Boy,” featuring tribal-like drums and guitar riffs. When Nancyboy and Umaka joined for arrangement, they added a one-chord riff structure often seen in metal and rock, creating a sequential progression. Umaka recorded a powerful, raw guitar performance, imagining a “warrior” image, while Nancyboy added psychedelic synth textures reminiscent of their early influences. The fourth track, " Hand in Hand ," was crafted as a minimalist piece with a repetitive loop. CIFIKA drew lyrical inspiration from the 1988 Korean Olympic anthem “Hand in Hand,” contrasting the unity of that time with today’s skeptical society. The fifth track, " Babes in the Wood ," revisits the familiar sound of " Little Drama " with a drum loop covered by a jam—also created by Nancyboy and developed into a track centered on themes of an “eroded digital world.” CIFIKA’s lyrics tell the story of outcasts seeking refuge in the woods, away from digital media and biases. The title comes from the American folk tale “Babes in the Wood.” Built on an arpeggio pattern Nancyboy created at 19, the sixth track, " Selena ," highlights CIFIKA ’s dreamlike qualities. The track combines real and electronic drums, with a later section featuring live-recorded guitar effects. Through the lyrics, the protagonist loses themselves under Selena’s (meaning “The Moon” in Greek) influence, depicting a blend of attraction and confusion. This carefully leads into the seventh track, " Bonfire. " An alternative folk song driven by drum machines, with a top-line that embodies a dystopian protagonist. Featuring actual friends of CIFIKA’s voices in the chorus, “Bonfire” symbolizes resilience against life’s trials, with a determination to keep moving forward, much like the image of tribes gathering around a fire. Falling in love is such an emotional rush, and the eighth track, " Brush ," captures that feeling perfectly. It uses the gentle act of brushing hair as a metaphor to explore love and vulnerability. Nancyboy blends soft vocals with expertly crafted synth sounds. The ninth track, " Pebble ," is a fresh take on Umaka’s earlier song “ Rolling Pebble .” This collaboration creates a cozy, chatty vibe by keeping the natural guitar sounds. Nancyboy and Umaka use guitar trills and strings to give it a dreamy feel, diving into themes of time, healing, and moving forward despite differences. The tenth track, " Heart Piece Collector ," is a dream-pop tune with shoegaze vibes. It features a vocal narration in the latter half that sounds like an AI voice, which fits right into CIFIKA’s electronic style. Her operatic vocals are inspired by the barcarolle in Act III of Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann. In the song, CIFIKA becomes a “Heart Piece Collector,” picking up pieces of broken hearts. The track takes you through lost memories and emotions that have sunk deep, symbolizing people holding onto unsent love letters and unhealed feelings. Wrapping up the album is the last track, " Totem. " It's inspired by Hermann Hesse’s idea in Demian that "fate and emotion are just two sides of the same coin." This outro, " Totem ," gently brings you back from dreamland, offering a calm contrast to the album's opener, " View ," which kicked off the dream adventure. “PS: If you wish to dream again, return to View.” Speaking to what it means to find connection and authenticity in today's world, “ Bonfire ” offers comfort, inspiration, and true connection, creating a unique and personal listening experience for people gathered around a campfire, away from the rigid hierarchies of the concrete jungle.

After discovering each artists' unique start into music, Oddjun, Woolenciah, and Willa were asked to describe the music they create, where they each agreed that it is a reflection of the raw emotions, capturing the essence of what each is feeling in the moment. Each note, each lyric, is a direct expression of their innermost thoughts and sentiments. The music each artist creates serves as a medium allowing them to convey a message that transcends words. It is a cathartic process, where each artist pours their heart and soul into every composition, infusing each piece with the intensity of their feelings. Through their music, they each aim to evoke an emotional response in the listener, to create a connection that goes beyond mere sound. It is a journey of self-discovery, and a way for them to explore and articulate the complex tapestry of emotions that make up the human experience. When it comes to the creative process of producing and composing songs, each artist has their unique approach that reflects their individuality and style. For Woolenciah, the process begins in a clean studio environment. He often starts by experimenting with the keyboard, letting his intuition guide him towards what captures his interest in that moment. Sometimes, he enters the studio with a specific idea in mind and then works on expanding and refining it further. On the other hand, Oddjun's process is more spontaneous and less focused on tidying up the workspace. He dives in by humming melodies and creating beats on the spot, allowing the music to naturally evolve from the initial spark. If the studio is clean, he shifts his focus to introspection. As for Willa, his creative journey starts with immersing himself in other music to absorb different vibes and influences. Drawing from the beats, tempo, and melodies that resonate with him, he shapes the beginning of his creative process. The interplay between these elements sets the foundation for his musical exploration and development. Next we took a moment to talk to each artist one-on-one, beginning with Oddjun. K Fuse: You released your latest single, “ Dance With My Angel .” What inspired this song? Oddjun : For "Dance With My Angel,” I am able to say the things I would say to a girl I saw for the first time. The lyrics express the way that I feel towards her, even seeing her for the first time, and the things I want to do with her. Expressing that she is an angel in my eyes. K Fuse : What's the most challenging part of creating your own music? Oddjun : I find the creative process of making music to be quite smooth overall, although it does encounter occasional slumps where inspiration seems to elude me momentarily. These moments, akin to writer's block, serve as temporary hurdles that he navigates with patience and perseverance. K Fuse: While the year is almost over, what is your biggest goal that you want to reach by the end of 2024? Oddjun: My biggest goal is to finish off this next performance well. Looking ahead to the future, I want to set my sights on a major milestone to achieve by the end of 2024 – delivering an outstanding performance that captivates my audience and leaves a lasting impression. With dedication and hard work, I aim to elevate my craft and showcase my musical talent with a memorable show. K Fuse : As an upcoming artist, what do you want fans to think of when they hear your music? Oddjun : I want to feel my emotions and the love that I have for what I do. I hope that my music serves as a conduit for fans to connect with their own emotions and experiences. By pouring my heart and soul into my art, I aspire to evoke a sense of empathy and understanding among listeners, allowing them to resonate with the passion and dedication I infuse into every musical creation. Through my music, I want to inspire others to embrace their feelings and find solace in the power of melody and lyrics. Up next was Woolenciah. K Fuse : Woolenciah, You appeared on Show Me The Money. What was that experience like for you? How do you feel your appearance on Show Me The Money evolved your creative process, or performances? Woolenciah : It's called Show Me The Money, so it goes up and you have to improve each time, so it was a good experience. I was able to appear in six sessions, and won the medal twice. K Fuse : You recently released your new single, “ AVENUE .” Can you walk us through your creative process for this song? Woolenciah : “ “AVENUE” was a unique creation process for me. Starting with an existing beat, I followed a more natural flow by humming and gradually crafting lyrics that harmonized seamlessly with the rhythm. This song emerged as one of the most organic and instinctive compositions, capturing a raw essence that resonates deeply with me as an artist -- and is the "AVENUE" that you know, today. Rounding off our individual interview was Willa. K Fuse : With your latest single, “ NAWABARI ,” what message did you want to convey to listeners? Willa : I am from Busan, and I wanted to represent myself as a person from Busan and celebrate where I am from in my own way. The song "NAWABARI" goes deep into my roots, showcasing my pride for my hometown of Busan. Through the music, I aim to represent my upbringing and the cultural richness of my origins, connecting with listeners on a personal and emotional level. K Fuse : What song has been the most memorable to create? Why? Willa : It would have to be Nawabari because it featured a beloved friend, basically brother, who is also a musician, whom I love and admire. Also, it represents me and where I come from. The creation of the song "NAWABARI" holds a special place in my heart as it allowed me to collaborate with my "brother," a fellow musician, adding a layer of personal connection and shared passion to the music-making process. The track not only symbolizes my deep affection for my "brother" and dear friend, but also serves as a reflection of my identity and the profound influence of my roots.
